Workshops

A highly experienced tutor, who runs courses with Dawn 2 Dusk Photography and Tatra Photography, Mark also offers a range of 1-2-1 and private group tuition.

Why choose Mark for 1-2-1 tuition?
Mark is one of the UK's leading landscape photographers. As the author of three books and countless magazine articles on photographic technique, he certainly knows his stuff. Furthermore, before becoming a full-time photographer in 2003, he worked for over 15 years as a teacher and teacher trainer, so has the skills to communicate his knowledge to others. In fact, several photographers who run workshops have themselves been trained by Mark.

Where do the workshops take place?
The workshops are based in Purbeck in Dorset. Mark is willing to travel to other parts of the country, but additional charges for travel and accommodation may be necessary.

What happens on a 1-2-1 tuition day?

There are two types of workshop: an 'In the Field' workshop, and a 'Capture to Print' workshop.

'In the Field' Workshop

The focus here is on developing camera technique and compositional skills. Prior to the day, Mark will carry out a thorough needs analysis to establish what your goals are and design a programme suitable for you. The day itself consists of up to 10 hours' instruction. Usually your day will start with a dawn shoot, after which there will be a short break to talk through any relevant technical points and to review the shots taken so far. The rest of the day will be spent in the field, covering those aspects of landscape photography relevant to you. Locations can be decided either by discussion with Mark, or you can leave it entirely up to him. During the summer months, when the days are longer, there will either be a break during the middle of the day, or a later start, around lunchtime. Weather depending, the day will finish at dusk.

'Capture to Print' Workshop

With digital photography, the image-making process does not usually finish when you press the shutter; good post-processing skills are vital for making the most of your images. Prior to the day, Mark will carry out a thorough needs analysis to establish what your goals are and design a programme suitable for you. The day itself consists of up to 10 hours' instruction, starting with an early shoot, and after a few hours spent in the field, the rest of the workshop will take place in Mark's home studio, processing selected images from the shoot. Mark will show you the basics of Adobe Lightroom - probably the industry's most popular image processing program - and hints and tips, pitched to your level of experience, to help you make your images stand out from the crowd. You will then make a print of your favourite image, learning how to get a true screen to print match. Your print will be mounted for you to take home with you.

What level do I have to be to come on a 1-2-1?
Any level. Mark has experience teaching all levels, from complete beginners to aspiring professionals, and even professionals.

What do I need to bring?
A camera, tripod and whatever lenses and any filters you have. Don't worry if you don't yet have a full filter system, as Mark has filters he is able to lend on the day. Transport between locations is provided.
